      Each plant listed will show a picture, and our notes about that plant.   When possible, we include the Latin botanical name, a short descriptions, and planting notes.

Celandine Poppy
Stylophorum diphyllum
This native perennial plant is 1–1½' tall, consisting of basal leaves and a stem that terminates in a small cluster of flowers. This stem is conspicuously hairy and has a pair of opposite leaves. The leaves are up to 6" long and 2½" across. They are double pinnatifid; there are 2-3 pairs of primary lobes along the length of each leaf, while shallow secondary lobes occur along the length of each primary lobe. There are scattered short hairs across the upper surface of each leaf, although they are hard to see.

Lungwort - Dora Bielefeld
pulmonaria saccharata
This species of lungwort makes a good trouble-free, evergreen groundcover, spreading slowly and requiring little care. 'Dora Bielefeld' has white spotted, green leaves and from late winter to late spring the pink, funnel-shaped flowers are borne over a long period.
We had this in the fern bed 3 years ago - it didn't have enough sun. It died after 2 years.

Sphaeralcea coccinea (Malvaceae )
Semi-desert, foothills. Disturbed areas, woodlands, openings. It loves dry, barren ground and often forms large patches. Leaves are cut in many divisions and are a silver green. "Coccin" is Latin for "scarlet. Famed 18th century botanist and Professor, Thomas Nuttall, collected this species "From the River Platte to the Rocky Mountains" in 1811 and named the plant Malva coccinea. Per Axel Rydberg renamed it Sphaeralcea coccinea in 1913.

Excellent in masses under heavy shade trees. Dense, lustrous evergreen, trailing vine-type of ground cover. White flowers in spring. Planted 6" apart, it will give a pleasing effect immediately and in two year’s time provide a solid ground cover. Good in any soil. Very hardy.

shade plant In early spring, the white wooly leaves push through the ground like may apples...or more appropriately, like shredded umbrellas after a hurricane. The exquisite foliage flattens out atop 15" stems by mid-spring. Expect a decent-sized colony as the rhizomes slowly spread (2' wide in 5-7 years).

Heat-loving, spreading perennial with showy, 2 to 3 inch wide red-purple flowers that bloom in summer. Trailing habit makes this an excellent ground cover or rock garden plant. Easy and durable plant. Plant in full sun for best growth and flowering. Grows well in both cold and hot, dry areas. Hardy in zone 4a. Grows 6 to 12 inches high and 1 to 3 feet wide. Keep soil moist until completely established. Drought tolerant when established. Little prunning is needed.
