Martha SCHLICHENMAYER Schaal-1994 Martha Martha Marie Schaal was born November 21, 1909 to John and Anna (Jacober) Schlichenmayer at their homestead north of Bethune. She was the oldest of three children. Martha was baptized at infancy and confirmed on April 1, 1923 at Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a life-long member. Martha was united in marriage on May 24, 1942, to Carl Andrew Schaal. They made their home on Carl's farm north of Bethune. Two children were born to this union; Marie Ann (Schaal) Eslinger was born January 12, 1944 and presently resides on the family farm and Carl Paul Schaal was born June 28, 1949 and presently lives in Longmont, Colorado. Prior to marriage, Martha worked in Burlington 12 years for Sim Hudson and Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Reed and others. She returned to the homestead area where she and Carl made their home. On May 26, 1954, Martha mourned the loss of her husband to heart complications. She assumed the challenges of raising two small children and maintaining the farm where she resided until her death. Martha enjoyed gardening, German cooking, and caring for her farm animals. She was active in church activities and especially loved the ladies aid and quilting. Martha suffered a stroke January 9, 1991 which left her left side paralyzed. She loved country life and chose to remain on the farm where she was cared for by her daughter Marie and son-in-law Virgil Eslinger. Martha was grateful for the many lifelong friends and neighbors who helped her through the years. Martha will be remembered most for her love of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who always brought a smile to her face, even up until her last day. Martha died Tuesday, September 27, 1994. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and brother Albert Schlichenmayer. Martha is survived by her daughter Marie Eslinger and her husband Virgil; one son Carl Schaal and wife Pam; a brother Chris Schlichenrnayer and wife Ruby; sister-in-law Esther Schlichenmayer; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. |
