Fred Bauder - 1957 Fred Bauder, 79, one of the first settlers of the Settlement north of Burlington, passed away suddenly Friday of last week. Mr. Bauder came to the Settlement directly from South Russia as a boy, and lived in this community for 68 years. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 20, with the Rev. Paul E. Holland officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery. Fred Bauder was born July 5, 1877 in South Russia to parents of German ancestry. In 1889 he came with his parents, Andreas Bauder and Christena Ottenbacher Bauder, to the United States, and on May 8 1902, was united in marriage to Minnie Fanselau. To this union were born four children., Paul, Rosina, Albert, and Alice. The couple was privileged to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary early this month. Following their marriage, the couple homesteaded northwest of Burlington and lived there until 1946 when they moved to their present home in Burlington. Fred Bauder served on the school board for the Blue View school for several terms, and was active in the organization of the co-op, serving as a director for some time. He was
baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran church on April 5, 1891.
About 1920 he united with the Burlington Methodist church, and was an active
member and faithful attendant to the time of his death. He served as
church custodian for eight years until family health forced his retirement, two
years ago, and made of the work a labor of love far exceeding any remuneration.
