John Adolf -- 1984

        Funeral services for John Adolf were Friday, April 6, 1984, at 1 pm in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bethune.  Rev. Michael Greenwalt officiated with Hendricks Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
        Song selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross".  The organist was Jean Weisshaar and the singers were the Men's Choir.  Casket bearers were grandsons Duane Weisshaar, Wes Adolf, Danny Schlichenmayer, Jerry Adolf, Philbert Trujillo, James Lightle, Michael Willis, Randy Adolf, Wayne Adolf, Rudy Adolf Jr., Kent Weisshaar, Bill Hensey, Steve Rosenberg, Tom Serres.  Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Bethune.
        John Adolf, son of William and Margareta (Buchfink) Adolf, was born Feb. 6, 1904, in South Russia.  In 1908, he came to America with his parents who homesteaded northwest of Burlington in the area which is commonly referred to as "The Settlement".
        John was baptized into the family of God as an infant while living in Russia.  He later affirmed his faith received in Holy Baptism by Confirmation on April 14, 1918, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, north of Bethune.
        On Oct. 25, 1925, John was married to Martha Sophia Stahlecker at Mosca.  To this union four children were born; Rudolph, Esther, Ernst and Louise.  John and Martha farmed in the settlement area until ill health hastened his retirement in 1966.  In 1978, they moved to Burlington.  The last four weeks of John's life were spent at Grace Manor Nursing Home in Burlington.
        John was devoted to his family and to his church, being a life long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, north of Bethune.  He and Martha served Immanuel as church custodians for many years.
        John passed from this life on April 3, 1984, at Grace Manor Nursing Home, at the age of 80 years, one month and 27 days.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters.
        He is survived by his wife Martha, four children; Rudolph and his wife Barbara of Fort Morgan, Esther Weisshaar and her husband Harold of Burlington, Ernst and his wife Hazel of Boise, Idaho, and Louise Schlichenmayer and her husband Vernon of Hay Springs, Neb.  There are also 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two sisters; Nettie Hasart and Frieda Weisshaar of Burlington, one brother William of Newberg, Ore., and many other relatives and friends.
