Rites Held for
August Adolf --  1948

August Adolf, son of Christian and Frederika Adolf, was born at Briene, Bessarabia, South Russia, march 22, 1868, and was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran church. He later received his instruction and was confirmed in the word of God in 1877. He grew to manhood in Russia, learning the trade of shoemaker.

On Nov. 9 1884, he was married to Kathrine Richter, and in May, 1888, he and his wife and two children came to America. First they settled at Scotland, S. D., where he worked in a shoe store. In March, 1890, he and his family, along with others, came to Burlington and started what is called the German Settlement. They organized the German Lutheran church with Rev. Daniel Mayer as the first pastor. In 1893 he helped build the first rock church, 24x40 feet, and when the congregation outgrew the church, he helped build the second structure, 32x60, in 1926. He also served on the church board.

In 1930 his dear wife died and he lived with his son, August, and family for about 15 years, living for the last three years with his children in Washington.

Mr. Adolf was in good health until two weeks before his death. He underwent an operation, and was making a satisfactory recovery, until complications developed and he died April 25, at the hospital in Yakima, Wash. His body was shipped to Burlington and funeral services were held at the Immanuel’s Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, May 2, with the Rev. L. C. Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel’s cemetery beside his wife.

He leaves to mourn his death his sons A. W. Adolf, Bethune, [this is all of the clipping that is available.]
