Magdalena Schlichenmayer   --  1989

     Funeral services for Magdalena Rosena Schlichenmayer were Tuesday, March 28, 1989, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bethune with Rev. Ron Powers officiating. 

     Song selections were Nearer My God To Thee, The Old Rugged Cross and Going Down The Valley, Singers were the Men's Choir and the congregation, with Jean Weisshaar being the organist.  Casket bearers were:  Marvin Bauder, Larry, Edward, Roy and Tom Schlichenmayer, and Junior Weisshaar.  Honorary bearers:  Wilford Adolf, Elmer Ebeler, David Guy, Lawrence Gramm, Chris and James Schlichenmayer, and Harold Weisshaar.  Interment was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with Hendricks Mortuary in charge of arrangements.  A memorial was established for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Bethune and may be left at the church, with Hendricks Mortuary or at The Bank of Burlington. 

     Magdalena Rosena Schlichenmayer was born June 1, 1886, in Talmage, Neb. to John and Christina (Wilhelm) Weisshaar.  She was baptized on Aug. 22, 1886.   In 1887 at the age of nine months she moved with her parents to a farm near Idalia.  She was confirmed in the Christian faith in the Lutheran Church near Idalia on April 29, 1900.  In 1901, the family moved to a farm 13 miles northeast of Bethune.  On Jan. 29, 1907, Lena was united in marriage with Gottlieb Schlichenmayer in the Immanuel Lutheran Church where she remained a lifelong member.  The young couple moved to a homestead only a few miles from her childhood home and lived there until April, 1987, when it became necessary for her to move to the Grace Mano Care Center in Burlington.  She passed away on March 24, 1989 at the age of 102 years, 9 months and 24 days. 

     Lena is survived by four sons:  Pete and wife Jean, Bethune; Lawrence of Bethune; Rudy of Burlington; and Vernon of Rushville, Neb.  Also surviving are her sisters Mary Adolf, Margaret Stahlecker and Anna Adolf; her brothers, William, Jacob and Karl Weisshaar, all of Burlington; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
 She was preceded in death by her husband Gottlieb; two daughters, Freda Schaal and Hulda Bauder; four sons, Fredrick, Bernard, Elmer and George; a brother John Weisshaar; two sisters, Christina Fischer and Freida Eischer; and two great-great-grandchildren.
