Richard RUNGE -- 1991

Funeral services for Richard Fredrick Runge were Wednesday, May 23, 1991, at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bethune with Rev. Ron Powers officiating.  Singers were the Men's Choir with Asleep in Jesus and Faith of Our Fathers. The congregation then joined in with Abide With Me and The Old Rugged Cross. Rudy Schlichenmayer was the pianist.  Casket bearers were Ray Chubbuck, Ronald Runge, Gary Kemper, Earl Gaines, Darrell Shanks and Freddy Gramm. Honorary casket bearers were Chris Schlichenmayer, Lawrence Schlichenmayer, Ralph Stahlecker, Edmund Gramm, Glen Maddox and Lawrence Gramm.  Interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Burlington with Hendricks Mortuary in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Bethune and may be left at the church or at Hendricks Mortuary.

Richard Fredrick Runge was born on April 25, 1912, in Pleasant Dale, Neb. He was baptized and confirmed in Emerald, Neb. The family moved by train to Kanorado in 1929. He was married in 1940. He lived 13 1/2 miles north of Bethune, where he farmed until his death on May 18, 1991.  He is survived by one daughter, LaVonne Hughes, of Casper, Wyo.; one adopted son, Gene of Rawlins, Wyo.; and son Wayne of Bethune; two sisters, Regina Adolf of Sterling and LaVera Ellis, also of Sterling; one brother, Harvey of Burlington; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Martha Runge, one sister, Frances Brendt, a brother, Harold and a brother, Marvin, who died in infancy.

Helen Katherine Gates, 84, of Warrenton, Ore., died on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004 in Wamenton, Ore.   Helen was born on Feb. 17, 1920, in Bethune, the daughter of Edward and Margaret Stahlecker. She was raised in Bethune where she received her education.  She went to Warrenton, Ore., from Casper, Wyo., in 1965. She worked as the manager of Mini Mart Warrenton and Astoria, Ore., retiring in 1981.  Helen was married to Ray Gates in September of 1982 in Astoria, Ore. Ray died June of this year.

Her memberships included the Treasure of Miss Clatsop County, Warrenton Garden Club, Christian Women's Society. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church since 1966 where she had served as its financial secretary from 1977 to 2003.  Helen was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Walter, Martin and Edgar Stahlecker.

She is survived by sons - Gene Johnson, Rawlins, Wyo., Wayne Runge, Bethune; daughters - LaVonne Hughes, Casper, Wyo., Earlene Hall, Westport, Ore., Cherie Masneri, Warrenton, Ore.  Stepsons - Lonnie Gates, Pendelton, Ore., Danny Gates, Portland, Ore., Jay Gates, Salem, Ore., Joe Gates, Bothell, Wash.; stepdaughter - Janet Tipton, Pendelton, Ore.; sisters - Lenora Weiss, Goodland, Kan., Irma Chubbick, Goodland, Kan., Wilma Maddox, Burlington, also survive her. Helen is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.  Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 1115 Broadway, Seaside, Ore., or to Lower Columbia Hospice in care of Caldwell's Lucc-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
