Nettie Hasart-2007
Annette “Nettie” Adolf Hasart, the last of the immigrants born
in Russia that made their home in the German Settlement North of Bethune, passed
away on July 1, 2007 at Grace Manor Care Center. She was born on December 21,
1907 and lived to the age of 99 years, 6 months and 10 days.
Nettie was born in Michaelsfeldt, Bessaarabia, Russia near the
Black Sea. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Michaeldfeldt as an
infant. Nettie was born to William and Margaret Adolf. At the age of 6
months, Nettie and her mother along with four of her siblings arrived at
Galveston, Texas in 1908. They were detained at the port in Galveston due to her
older sister, Margaret’s, eye infection for 3 months. They traveled by train to
Bethune, Colorado where they united with her father and other siblings who
arrived several months earlier. Nettie lived and grew to adulthood in the
Settlement Community attending Prairie View School and the German School at
Immanuel Lutheran Church were she was confirmed. As a young woman she
helped neighbors, cooking and cleaning and caring for their children when a
mother was ill or needed help. She married Jacob C. “Jake” Hasart at Immanuel
Lutheran Church on April 27, 1927. She moved to the Hasart Farm 12 miles
northeast of Stratton, Colorado. There, her children were born, Gerald, born in
1928, and died at the age of 6 days, Jim born in 1929 and Virginia born in 1932.
Nettie was a very hard worker helping her husband by picking
corn, shocking feed, helping with harvest, cooking meals for harvest crews,
raising chickens and turkeys, milking cows and other chores. She was a great
cook and housekeeper and loved to crochet, embroidery and later in her life
making quilts for family and friends and for charity with her women’s group at
church. Jake and Nettie moved to Burlington, in June of 1954 and
transferred their church membership to First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Many
winters were spent in Phoenix, Arizona area with friends from Nebraska and
Colorado. Jake passed away in 1976. After she was widowed she spent many
days and evenings playing cards and games with friends. She was a member of RSVP
and active in their kitchen band and helped hand quilt many quilts. In 1996 she
moved to the Legacy as one of its first residents. In June of 2000, after
breaking her hip she was admitted to Grace Manor Care Center where she lived the
last seven years.
