Dick Bauer Dies in Mine Mishap
By Troy Correspondent

Troy High School students Jack and Carolyn Bauer received tragic news late Saturday afternoon of the accidental death of their father, Richard (Dick) Bauer, 37, in South Dakota.  The telephone message came at about 5:15 from their mother, Lois, who with the two younger children, Sheila and Jody, had recently joined Dick at Deadwood, S.D., where he was employed by a Canadian mining company generally referred to as the CM. Dick was being lowered into a mine shaft With another employee when some part of the equipment gave way, dropping them 600-700 feel to their deaths.

A memorial service at Deadwood was held Tuesday at 10 a.m. by the company  after which the body was flown by a mining official in his private plane, with Lois accompanying it, to Grand Junction, Colo. There the funeral services were to be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Martin Funeral Home [CORRECTION: Baptist Church] with burial to follow at Norwood.

Dick had worked in this area also for the mining and drilling company, driving  two tunnels on Mt. Vernon. The company puts in tunnels and roadbeds to a grade so that ore can be hauled out.

He was known to the basketball team here, of which his son Jack is a senior class member, other members of the team having also hunted with him. So it was an emotional moment at Saturday's final basketball game of the season here when Jack was the first player introduced. He had elected to stay with the team rather than grieve in seclusion. His sister Carolyn, a cheerleader  who had gotten the sad news while working with other girls making corsages and otherwise preparing for the evening's Senior Night festivities, similarly stuck with the original plans.

They left for Deadwood at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday accompanied by Diana O'Neil and Mike Gibson who did the driving. They later reported bad roads and a 5 1/2 hour trip to reach Missoula, but telling of their safe arrival in Deadwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Neises (who haul cheerleaders to games) will meet them at the Missoula airport tonight and take them to Polson to join the team and cheerleaders at the divisional basketball tournament. Though they will miss the Trojans' first game at 7:30 Thursday night against Darby, they will be on hand Friday and Saturday.

Lois Bauer will remain in Colorado. Relatives are bringing the family belongings to Colorado from Deadwood. Lois's mother lives at Naturita and Dick's mother at Grand Junction [CORRECTION: also lived in Naturita area, although in her later years she did move to Grand Junction]. Lois can be
reached c-o Orta Estes. Box 391. Naturita. Colo. 811422.

Clipping (and Corrections) from Betty Mosher, Thompson Falls, MT.
