Marie Knodel-1963
Marie Magdoline (Schaal) Knodel was born in Gnadenthal, Bessarabia, Russia, July 30, 1895. She was one of five children of George and Karoline Doebbler Schaal. Her father died in Russia in 1903. Her brothers and sister, Jim, John and Katie, came to the United States to the settlement north of Bethune in 1905. Marie, her mother, and a younger brother, Chris, followed in 1907, coming to a homestead in the Bethune settlement. Marie lived with her mother on the homestead for several years then worked out in several places. She was united in marriage to Theodore C. Knodel on June 28, 1922 at Denver. They began their married life together in their present home in Bethune. To this union three sons were born. Marie was confirmed in the Emmanuel Lutheran church in the settlement in 1909. In 1912 she united with the Hope Congregational church. Upon making her home in Bethune, she attended the Evangelical United Brethren church and united with it in 1954 where she was a member at the time of her death.
Her health began to fail in January of 1953 [63] and she had consulted many different doctors and had been through several clinics. On May 15, she was taken to the Kit Carson County Memorial hospital in Burlington and at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, she passed away, very suddenly. She was 67 years, 9 months and 22 days old. Mrs. Knodel is survived by her husband of the home in Bethune; her three sons, Robert, Denver; Raymond, Loveland, and Russell, Cody, Wyo.; two brothers, Chris Schaal, Yakima, Wash., and Jim Schaal, Los Gatos, Calif.; nine grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Final rites for Mrs. Marie M. Knodel of Bethune were held Friday, May 24, at the Hendricks Chapel with Rev. V. J. Lamm officiating. She died May 21 at the Memorial Hospital in Burlington. Pallbearers were Albert Amman, G. E. Schaal, Floren Kuhn, Vaughn Taylor, Lorn Ardueser and Clifford Schaal. Vocal selections, “Beyond the Sunset” and “Sometime We’ll Understand,” were sung by a male quartet, Emil Strobel, John Dobler, Albert Strobel and Ted Dobler. The organist was Donna Gross. Knodel of Bethune; three sons, Robert of Denver, Raymond of Loveland and Russell of Cody, Wyo., two brothers, Chris Schaal of Yakima, Wash., and Jim Schaal of Los Gatos, Calif.; nine grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
