John Chris (Jake) Jacober-2005
John was the first
child born to Chris and Bessie (Outhet) Jacober. He was born Sept. 10, 1922 at
the family farm north of Burlington and passed away Feb. 21, 2005 in Wheat Ridge
at the age of 82 years following a short illness. He was baptized in the
Lutheran Church in 1922.
John worked in CCC camp for 2 years before he
went into military service. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the
Korean War with 3 1/2 years on L.S.T. 486, 1 year aboard Carrier Escort Tawara
30, 6 years on U.S.S. Barry D.D., 4 years on U.S.S. New D.D.E. 818; 2 years on
U.S.S. Boxer LPH-4 retiring in April 1974 with 20 years active service and 10
years inactive reserve. He was involved in 5 major battles during World War II
including Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tawara and Iwo Jima.
John married Patricia Travis Sept. 17, 1960 in Taunton, Mass. To this union 4
children were born, Elizabeth, Francis "Frank", June and Anna. John also adopted
Patricia's son, Joseph. In addition to his children and
grandchildren, he had a passion for fishing, fly tying as evidenced by his
well-stocked shop, photography and garage sales.
John was preceded in death by both his
parents, his wife, Patricia, two brothers-in-law; Clarence "John" Schlosser and
Ben Nix. Surviving him are 5 children, Joseph (Darla) Jacober; Elizabeth
(Marvin) Spillman; Francis "Frank" Jacober; June (Dane) Eckroth; and Anna
Jacober; 7 grandchildren Meghann, Sandra and Joseph Jacober; Ian and James
Spillman; Corii June and Trevor Eckroth, all from the Denver area.
Two sisters, Dorotha Schlosser, Fountain, Darlene Nix, Edgewater; two brothers,
Ed (Alice) Jacober, Westcliffe, and E.J. (Vivian) Jacober, Lakewood, plus many
nieces and nephews also survive him
Burial was at Fork Logan National Cemetery,
Denver, on Feb. 28, 2005 |
