Herbert LaVern Schaal --  1946

         Herbert LaVern Schaal, 73, formerly of Bethune, died at is home on Friday, March 20, 1998, in Shelley, Idaho.
         He was born on Sept. 20, 1924 in Bethune, the son of John M. and Anna Sack Schaal.  In May of 1935, his parents moved the family to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they worked in the beet fields.  In April of 1936, they moved to the Magic Valley area.  Vern attended schools in Filer and Buhl.
        In January of 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and took his basic training at Farragutt, Idaho.  He was assigned to a Navy ship, the U.S.S. Sculptor.  His tour of duty was in the South Pacific during World War II.  He received an honorable discharge on Feb.  11, 1946, proudly serving his country for three years and two months.
        He met Evelyn Robinson in April of 1957 and they were married July 21, l957, at Downey, Idaho.  They lived in the Buhl area until l965 when the family moved to Shelley, Idaho, where he worked as an insurance agent for several years.  He then worked for many years at Sears in Idaho Falls until he retired in 1996.
        He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.  His greatest pastime was his grandchildren.
        His survivors are his wife Evelyn of Shelley, Idaho, son Steve of Gooding, Idaho, four daughters - Jill (Bob) Brown of Kennewick, Wash., Judy (Steve) Theobald of American Falls, Idaho, Kelly (David) Cook of Shelley, Idaho, Annette Schaal of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sister- - Lillian (Jake) Stahlecker of Castleford, Idaho, Dorothy (Carl) Kerner of Shoshone, Idaho, and one sister-in-law, Helen Schaal of Twin Falls, Idaho, many of nieces, nephews, and a host friends.
        He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Arthur in infancy, Robert in the service of his country in World War II, and Albert in 1983.
        The funeral was held in Shelley, Idaho, on March 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Stewart Hoover, Post #23 of Blackfoot, Idaho.
