Edgar Stahlecker -- 1933
Friends and relatives were saddened and shocked by
the death of Edgar Stahlecker, who passed away at the age of 24, at Cortez,
Colo.
Edgar had left Burlington on December 13, 1932, for
Monticello, Utah, where he was building and preparing, a lovely little
home, where be planned to bring his bride in June.
While there, as always, he took an active part in
God's work.
On Friday, April 28, immediately after dinner he
became ill and word was sent that he had flu, although not serious.
On May 5, a friend, who had stayed with him since his arrival there, took
Edgar to consult a doctor at Dove creek, who pronounced his sickness as
appendicitis.
He was taken to the Johnson hospital at Cortez.
An hour before his operation he wrote his loved ones. Among his words
were: "Worry not."
On Saturday morning a telephone call came saying, "Edgar
is not expected to live." At noon Dr. Johnson was called to the telephone
and answer to the question of Edgar's condition, said: "There is no hope
for life longer than morning."
As Edgar's parents were unable to go to him on account
of Mr. Stahlecker's poor health, but wanted someone there with him, a close
friend, Henry Fanselau went. He left Saturday morning to be at his
bedside, and helped do the last things for him in this life on earth.
Arriving at the hospital Sunday night at about 8:00 o'clock, he stayed
at his bedside 'till 11:33 Tuesday night, when the end came. On the
day of his death he very earnestly prayed aloud to his redeemer especially
for forgiveness and protection. He quoted a beautiful memory verse:
Trust and never doubt,
He will
surely help you out,
Take your burden to the Lord,
He will
always lift the load.
Death came calmly and quietly, Edgar being conscious and
still able to talk and smile to the last.
The sincere and straight-forward way in which he
said and did everything, won him friends who will sadly miss him.
He was a ray of sunshine always, loved and was loved by all. New
friends which he had acquired while in Utah expressed their thoughts as
having lost a dear friend, kind neighbor and a good citizen. Many
were the friends inquiring how Edgar was getting along, some corning as
far as 60 miles to sit up with him at the hospital the last two nights,
and were there with Mr. Fanselau at the time of his death.
He was called to his heavenly home at 11:33 o'clock
Tuesday evening, May 9, 1933.
He leaves to mourn his loss his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Christ Stahlecker of Burlington; his fiance Leona Fanselau of Burlington;
three sisters, Mrs. Emma McCarl of Burlington; Mrs. Ruth Sly of Denver,
and Mrs. Lydia Dikeman of Ft. Morgan; one brother, Arthur of Burlington;
many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and many true, cherished friends.
Edgar Martin Stahlecker was born September 25, 1908
and passed away May 9, 1933, aged 24 years, 8 month, 13 and 14 days.
