E. A. Schlichenmayer  --  1966

Elmer Amos Schlichenmayer, son of Gottlieb Schlichenmayer and his wife Magdalena, nee Weisshaar, was born May 8, 1919, in the German Settlement northwest of Burlington, and all except the time spent in military service in World War II he spent in the community.  Shortly after his birth on May 19. he was baptized by Pastor Karl Maemoelman of Hope Congregational Church.  Immanuel Lutheran Church did not have a pastor at that time.  Church and home cooperated to give him a Christian training.  He was confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church on December 26, 1935, by pastor H. L. Woelber.
He was inducted into the U. S. Army on May 26, 1942.  He spent most of his service time in the European Theater of war.  He received his discharge on Nov. 11, 1945.  He never married.  At the time of his death he made his home with his mother on a farm north of Bethune.
He met death in a fatal two car head-on crash 12 miles south of Vona Sunday morning, Oct., 9, at about 8:30.
He leaves to mourn his passing his mother, Mrs. Magdalena Schlichenmayer, Bethune; two sisters, Mrs. Freda Schaal, Burlington, Mrs. Hulda Bauder, Rocky Ford; six brothers, Frederick R. Schlichenmayer, George J. Schlichenmayer, Lawrence W. Schlichenmayer and Vernon
R. Schlichenmayer, all of Bethune; Emil E. Schlichenmayer, and Rudolf R. Schlichenmayer of Burlington.  One brother, Bernard G. Schlichenmayer, died in infancy in 1917.  His father, Gottlieb Schlichenmayer, died in 1946.
Funeral services were conducted at the Hendricks Chapel in Burlington and in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bethune, Oct, 12, with Pastor Herbert J. Schauer officiating.  Interment was made in the cemetery of Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Pallbearers were Edgar Stahlecker, Junior Weisshaar, David Adolf, Harold Weisshaar, Harold Schlichenmayer, and Chris Adolf.
