Schlichenmayer fatally injured in I-70 accident
Burlington Record

Colorado State Patrol was dispatched to an accident near Stratton on Interstate 70 on Friday, April 20, which took the life of longtime resident Lawrence William Schlichenmayer, 78, of Bethune.  According to Troopers Duane Laverenz and McMahan, Schlichenmayer, driving a 1991 Ford pickup, had apparently exited east down the westbound ramp to I-70 at Stratton and struck a 1997 Dodge pickup that was in the westbound passing lane on the interstate at approximately 12:50 p.m. The Ford was pushed west by the Dodge, and went off the left side of the road, rolling ¼ time.  Schlichenmayer’s vehicle came to rest on its driver’s side.  The Dodge continued west, going off the right side of the road, coming to rest on its wheels facing southwest.  Schlichenmayer was pronounced dead by Kit Carson County Coroner Dr. Anthony Olaiz at the scene at 2 p.m.  Time of death was estimated at 12:55 p.m.  Stratton Emergency Medical Service assisted at the scene.  The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, Leo Pachl, 59, and Eleanor B. Pachl, 51, of Aurora, were transported by ambulance to Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital.  According to the report, Leo was treated for a broken left femur, and Eleanor for a broken sternum.  Schlichenmayer had lived north of Bethune his entire life, and was a brother of Pete and wife jean Schlichenmayer of Bethune, Rudy Schlichenmayer of Burlington, and Vernon Schlichenmayer of Whitney, Neb.  Services were  held Tuesday, April 24, 2001, 10 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Bethune with interment in the church cemetery.
