Arthur E. "Art" Gramm passed away Monday, Aug. 31, 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Gramm of Burlington; three daughters
- Jeanne Waite, Bill Oldfather of Cottonwood, Ariz., Betty (Dave) Corliss
of Stratton, and Vivian (Don) Moon of Holton, Mich.; two grandsons, five
granddaughters, four great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; and
sister, Mabel Adolf of Burlington.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Emma Gramm; brother
Albert and sister Esther, both of whom died in infancy, and a son, Arthur
Lee, who died in infancy.
Art was born June 10, 1912 in Burlington, to Jacob and Emma (nee Stutz)
Gramm. He passed away in Colorado Springs at the age of 86 years
2 months and 21 days.
Art started school in a country school, moving to the town of Bethune
to finish elementary school and start high school. He graduated from
Burlington High School in 1930. After graduation, he attended Coyne Electrical
School in Chicago, Ill,
During the depression years, Art joined the Civilian Conservation Corp
(CCC) as a cook. He was sent to Phoenix, Ariz. where he met his wife,
Helen Tinsley. They were married Jan. 1, 1935, in Florence, Ariz. Returning to Colorado, he started with Safeway Stores Inc. in Colorado
Springs in the meat department. While with Safeway, he also lived
in Cripple Creek and Florence, Clayton, NM, and Pueblo.
In the fall of 1946 he was transferred to Pueblo, where he became a
store manager, a position he held until his retirement in the spring of
1968. At this time he became associated with J.B. Morris Brokerage
Company until 1974 when the office was moved to Denver.
During his retirement years, Art and Helen enjoyed traveling and camping.
They visited 48 of the 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. They
also visited Canada, Mexico and went on a Carribean Cruise.
In the summer of 1995, a backyard reception was held celebrating their
60th anniversary. They sold their home the following fall and moved
to Cottonwood, Ariz. They had recently moved to Burlington. Art was very active in many organizations and his church. He
was a member of Central Christian Church, serving in many ways, including
chairman of the board, elder, trustee and elder emeritus.
He was very active in the Optimist Club of Pueblo and served various
offices, both local and district. He was a member of Silver State
Lodge No. 95 AF&AM, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Al Kaly and other
Shrine organizations. He was past patron of Eastern Star, Adah Chapter
No. 34. He also served on the Colorado State Fair Junior Livestock
Sales Committee, the Goodwill Board and Colorado Christian Home Board.
Art also volunteered at the Colorado Visitor's Center in Pueblo.
He was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club and the Second Chance Good
Sam's Camping Club.
Cremation was by Mongomery & Steward Crematorium in Pueblo.
A memorial service and Masonic rites will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday,
Sept. 25, 1998, at Central Christian Church, 1902 N. Hudson, in Pueblo.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at
First Christian Church in Burlington with the Reverend Warren Turner officiating
both services.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Burlington or
Hope Congregational Church in Bethune.
