John Bertsch was born to Jacob F. Bertsch and Elizabeth Rau
Bertsch in 1867 in Bergdorf, South Russia. As a young man he came
to the United States in 1887, making his first stop at Menno,
South Dakota where he was employed for three
years.
In 1890 he homesteaded 13 miles east of Eureka. This is where he
continued to live until his death November 2, 1945. He married
Magdelina Gutjahr who passed away in 1904. He later married
Magdelina Beringer who died in 1936.
John Bertsch is the father of 13 children of which seven died in
the diphtheria and flu epidemic Those surviving were: Fred, Jonas,
Magdelina (Mrs. Henry
Heiser), Margaret (Mrs. Henry Boschee), all deceased, and
Christina Vilhauer and Mrs. Ed (Mary) Jakober, both still living
in Eureka.
