Catherine the Great
(Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt-Zerbst) was born April 21, 1729, in
Strettin Germany (now Poland). August 21, 1745 she married Grand Duke Peter
Fedorovich, the future Tzar Peter III of Russia. In 1762 she became the
Empress of Russia (1762-1796). It was due to Catherine's
manifesto of 1763 that hundreds of thousands of
Germans emigrated to Russia. Catherine died as a result of a stroke at the
age of 67.
