History of the Church

Hope United Church of Christ was organized in a School house north of  Bethune, Colorado, on Aug. 31, 1911.  After a disagreement in the within the Lutheran Church (one mile South) a number of families split off to organize the "German Evangelical Congregational Hoffnungs Church."

On January 18, 1912 the congregation voted to build a church and this task was undertaken immediately. The first church building was a small one-room frame structure which stood some 250 feet west and north of the present brick church. It was completed and dedicated, together with the cemetery, on Feb. 18, 1912.  A new church, one of red brick was constructed on the same site and dedicated on September 2, 1928.

During the summer of 1993? a tornado struck the church and destroyed it.  It was completely rebuilt and now serves the congregation that gathers there each Sunday.
